Aix-en-Provence, three words that sum it all up: history, architecture, culture, lifestyle, beautiful weather, stunning light, magnificent landscapes, modernity and dynamics of a city whose emphasis is on beauty. Founded in the year 122 BC, Aquae-Sextiae is the oldest of the French cities founded by the Romans in Gaul. Water has always been essential to the growth of the city. Water from natural springs, from the Verdon Canal and later the Canal de Provence flows in the many fountains throughout Aix-en-Provence. The melodious sound of flowing water guides us from one square to another as we stroll the streets in Aix. From the Cours Mirabeau through the Mazarin quarter to the square known as Place d’Albertas, a jewel in the very heart of the historical city centre. We follow in the footsteps of those who forged history here: the Salyes at Entremont, the Romans who founded the city, the Catalonian Counts of Provence, King René, Mirabeau, Cézanne, Zola, Darius Milhaud and other famous people from Aix. Music sets the tempo of life in Aix, with the International Music Festival in summer and the Easter festival in the spring.
Watercolour drawings by Andrée Terlizzi capture the eternal beauty of Aix-en-Provence.
